Why do we regret ?

Met a friend of mine today...hearing from him after a very long time. As usual he was lost in his thots....wonder what was pestering Paramjit this time ? On persisting with my qs, he answered that he was regretting a decision that he made.Actually he 'd applied for apps @ a foreign uni....but left it for another choice which back-fired on him.I consoled him by trying to make him look at the positive side of life. But I aint sure whether he bought my argument or not.
Anyways, the small conversation set me thinking abt a qs.."Why does a person regret?"...well to start off with...there may be many reasons..for example in Paramjit's case it was an error in judgement, he being unable to weigh the pros n cons n come to a proper decision after a careful analysis of the different variables....but in general, a person may regret...when his actions violate his core values. Then why is it that, for the same action some regret whereas some remain unaffected..maybe bcoz everyone has a different set of core values...values being the result of the environment that we are brought up in. To put it mathematically, values are a function of the environment...n hence for the same action some feel a deep regret whereas some remain unaffected.I wud like to write more on this...but getting late for my lab-work....maybe time permitting, wud pen down some more thots on this later...:)..signing off for today.
